PROBLEM
A sewage treatment plant required a solution to protect a Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) tank which is used in the treatment of waste water, from corrosion and chemical attack. The DAF tank was built using reinforced concrete and includes a carbon steel scraper system.
APPLICATION
The customer selected Belzona 5811, since it is an epoxy coating designed for corrosion and chemical protection of equipment operating under immersion and offers the best long-term solution compared to other available products. Following an initial assessment of the tank, cleaning was undertaken to remove oil and grease from rails and tank internals. Thereafter, the tank internals were high pressure hot washed twice at 120°C to remove all contaminants. Next, the tank internals were Sponge and Garnet blasted to remove the existing coating and to rough the concrete surface to create mechanical bonding for the Belzona product. Thereafter, the tank internals were cleaned to remove all dust from the abrasive blasting. Finally, a first coat of Belzona 5811 Beige at 250 microns was applied to the internals of the tank, followed by a second coat of Belzona 5811 Grey at 250 microns achieving a total minimum dry film thickness of 500 microns.

OUTCOME
Belzona 5811 was successfully applied to the surface of the tank, and will provide outstanding long-term corrosion protection and chemical resistance to the tank internals in this hazardous environment.

A 2-part epoxy coating which provides outstanding chemical resistance and protects equipment operating under immersion in aqueous solutions up to 50°C (122°F) from the effects of corrosion. This solvent-free material can be easily applied by brush or spray to virtually any metallic and non-metallic surface, simplifying maintenance works.
