PROBLEM
Entrapped moisture under the tank base of a boiler fuel storage tank at a power station was eroding and corroding the tank base substrate. Non-destructive testing indicated that the tank base had suffered metal loss on the underside of the base.
A solution was required to protect the tank base before it became too thin, which would have resulted in a costly replacement of the entire tank base and the tank being decommissioned.
APPLICATION
Belzona’s Sealatank system comprising of Belzona 9321 and Belzona 3211 was selected as the preferred solution for sealing the tank base and preventing moisture ingress. A key advantage of this system is its ability to allow trapped moisture to dissipate as a vapour through the membrane.

Belzona 3921 GSC Conditioner applied, followed by the application of spray foam in the shape of a wedge to create a smooth transition from concrete plinth to tank
OUTCOME
The tank base is now completely sealed and will provide many years of service without any further degradation, saving the customer money and downtime. If inspection is required, a section of the membrane can be removed, inspected and reinstated without any disruption to the Sealatank system. The customer is very pleased with the result and now has one less problem to worry about!
