PROBLEM
Leaks of the potent greenhouse gas, SF6 were detected during an inspection of a power station in Tasmania and required an in-situ repair.

APPLICATION
Belzona 1161, a surface tolerant paste grade metal repair composite requiring minimal surface preparation, was used in conjunction with Belzona 9341 reinforcement mesh to seal the leak. Thereafter, Belzona 5831, a surface tolerant coating which reduces the need for on site abrasive blasting, was used as a barrier coating.

OUTCOME
A full containment of the leak was easily achieved using the Belzona range of products. The contractor and customer were very pleased with the outcome, which resulted in similar applications at other power stations across Tasmania facing the same problem.

Belzona’s wide range of epoxy-based metal repair composites and high temperature coatings and linings has been used in the water and wastewater industry since the late 1970s.
Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal)
A 2-part composite material for metal repair and resurfacing based on a solvent-free, surface-tolerant epoxy resin reinforced with silicon steel alloy.
This composite material is specifically designed for application to wet and oil contaminated surfaces, as well as for underwater applications. It is easy to mix and apply without the need of specialist tools and can be machined using conventional tools.
Belzona 5831 (ST-Barrier)
A 2-part epoxy coating which once cured forms a barrier coating for the protection of equipment operating under immersed conditions or in contact with aqueous solutions. This solvent-free epoxy coating bonds strongly to steel and other metallic and non-metallic surfaces such as concrete or brick.
