Belzona 5831 (ST-Barrier)
A 2-part epoxy coating which once cured forms a barrier coating for the protection of equipment operating under immersed conditions or in contact with aqueous solutions.
This 100% solids epoxy coating bonds strongly to steel and other metallic and non-metallic surfaces such as concrete or brick.
Belzona 5831 (ST-Barrier) is specifically formulated for application to wet and oil contaminated surfaces that cannot be dry for application, as well as for underwater applications. The coating displaces water from the surface ensuring maximum adhesion to damp or wet surfaces, even underwater.
Key benefits
- Simple mixing ratio
- Application and cure at room temperature – no hot work involved
- Cures underwater
- Reduced health and safety risks as it is 100% solids
- Excellent bonding to wet surfaces
- Tolerant to oil contamination
- No shrinkage, expansion or distortion
- Prevents galvanic corrosion
- Excellent bonding to many metal surfaces including steel, stainless steel and other specialist steels as well as to non-metallic surfaces such as concrete and brick
Applications for Belzona 5831 (ST-Barrier) include:
- Prevention of corrosion and deterioration of metalic substrates in splash zones, pipework, tanks, bunds and clarifiers
- Protecting submersible pumps, valves and transformers from the effects of galvanic corrosion
- Long-term repair and coating of oil and water leaks
- Sealing of joints and flanges

Frequently asked questions
What is the best coating for protecting a steel gate in dam water?
Belzona 5831 (ST-Barrier) is an excellent protective coating for steel gates operating in dam water, reservoirs, and other permanently wet or submerged environments. This moisture-tolerant epoxy coating is specifically designed for application onto wet, damp, or even underwater steel surfaces where conventional coatings often fail.
The coating forms a durable corrosion barrier that protects steel from water ingress, rust, galvanic corrosion, and environmental attack. Because Belzona 5831 can bond strongly to steel in immersed conditions, it is ideal for dam gates, sluice gates, water infrastructure, spillway components, pipework, and other assets exposed to fresh water immersion.
Can Belzona 5831 be applied to a steel gate that is already wet or partially underwater?
Yes. Belzona 5831 (ST-Barrier) was specifically developed for situations where steel surfaces cannot be completely dried before coating application. The product displaces water from the substrate and adheres to wet, damp, or underwater steel surfaces, making it highly suitable for dam gates, water control structures, and marine steelwork requiring in-situ corrosion protection.
This allows maintenance teams to coat or repair steel infrastructure exposed to dam water without extensive shutdowns or complete dewatering. Belzona 5831 has also been successfully used on submerged steel structures including jetty pilings, splash zones, tanks, and offshore assets where long-term corrosion resistance is essential.
