PROBLEM
A turbo separator is a disc screen used for coarse screening in wastepaper processing, helping remove both light and heavy contaminants such as paperclips, staples and other impurities through centrifugal separation. The unit is lined with thick basalt tiles, with a hard-wearing grouting compound applied over the joints between them to protect against abrasion.
Over time, the grouting compound had worn away, leaving the joints exposed in a highly abrasive operating environment. Some basalt tiles had also broken, creating voids that required rebuilding and protection.

APPLICATION
After the pulp was cleaned out, the turbo separator was dried using rags to prepare the repair area. Surface preparation was then carried out using a diamond blade on an angle grinder, creating a mechanical “key” to support adhesion of Belzona 1818.
Belzona 1818 was mixed and applied to the worn joint areas, including overhead sections. The material was also used to rebuild and fill voids where sections of the basalt tiles had broken away, restoring protection to the exposed areas and providing a straightforward repair solution.

OUTCOME
Previously, Belzona 1812 had been used to repair the turbo separator. For this application, Belzona 1818 provided a more practical solution, offering easier application on vertical and overhead areas, reduced surface preparation requirements, and a quicker return to service.
The repair helped restore protection to the worn joint areas while delivering time and cost savings for the customer.
