PROBLEM
Turbine blades at a hydroelectric power plant were worn and exhibited severe cavitation damage.
Immediate repair was required to prevent further degradation.

APPLICATION
Worn areas were abrasive blasted to the SA2.5 cleanliness standard, achieving a minimum surface profile of 75 Microns.
First, damaged areas were rebuilt with Belzona 1111, a high performance metal repair composite. Next, two coats of Belzona 1341 were applied at 250 microns per coat to enhance efficiency and provide protection against erosion and corrosion.
Finally, two coats of Belzona 2141, were applied to protect the blades from cavitation damage. This flexible rubber material is appropriate for coating extremely high localised pressure areas where abrasion, cavitation, erosion and corrosion resistance are required.

OUTCOME

Belzona 1111 (Super Metal)
A 2-part repair composite for metal repair and resurfacing based on solvent-free epoxy resin reinforced with silicon steel alloy. This repair material will not corrode and resists a wide range of chemicals. It is easy to mix and apply without the need of specialist tools and can be machined using conventional tools.
Belzona 1341 (Supermetalglide)
A 2-part epoxy coating designed to improve efficiency of pumps, pipes, valves and other fluid handling equipment while protecting them from the effects of erosion and corrosion. This high performance product is proven to reduce energy consumption, provide excellent chemical resistance and lower maintenance costs.
Belzona 2141 (ACR-Fluid Elastomer)
A 2-part polyurethane resin designed for the coating of metal and rubber components. This flexible rubber material is appropriate for coating extremely high localised pressure areas where abrasion, cavitation, erosion and corrosion resistance are required. This fluid material is easy to mix and apply without the need for specialist tools and it cures at room temperature eliminating the need for hot work.
