PROBLEM
A transformer developed an active oil leak from one of its cooling fins.
The customer required a cold-applied solution capable of stopping the leak, reinforcing the damaged area and providing a durable seal without hot work or specialist equipment.

APPLICATION
A cold-applied system comprising Belzona 9611, Belzona 1212 and Belzona 9341 Reinforcement Tape was selected to arrest the active leak and provide a reinforced, durable repair.
Once the exact source of the leak was identified, excess transformer oil was removed and the surrounding surface was roughened.
Belzona 9611 was pressed firmly into the leak, with a clamp used to hold the applicator in position and maintain pressure while the material cured. After approximately one hour, the clamp and applicator were removed.
The area was then abraded, cleaned and degreased to remove oil, contaminants and grinding residue.
Belzona 1212 was worked firmly into the prepared surface before a pre-cut section of Belzona 9341 Reinforcement Tape, wetted out with Belzona 1212, was embedded into the repair.
A final layer of Belzona 1212 was applied over the reinforcement tape to fully encapsulate it and create a durable reinforced seal over the leak area.
OUTCOME
The transformer fin oil leak was successfully sealed using the cold-applied Belzona repair system. The repair worked on the first application, with the customer reporting they were “really happy with Belzona” and that it “worked perfectly the first time.”

A 2-part surface-tolerant epoxy composite engineered specifically for in-situ application to wet, oil contaminated and underwater surfaces. This multi-purpose solvent-free material exhibits rapid cure and excellent adhesion to manually prepared substrates, where grit blasting cannot be achieved.
