PROBLEM
An underground carbon steel pipeline (Grade API 5L X52) with an outside diameter
of 355.6mm, developed a critical Class: 3 (thin wall) defect with only 2.7mm wall
thickness remaining.
The pipeline which operates at a temperature of 40 °C and a pressure of 70 bar had a critical defect area of 56mm by 83mm, however the total defect length measured 8.1m.

APPLICATION
The Belzona SuperWrap II composite repair system was chosen as the preferred solution since it can be designed and applied in accordance with ISO 24817 and ASME PCC-2 standards.
All design work was carried out by a certified Belzona design engineer, while the application was performed by trained and validated Belzona applicators qualified to install Belzona SuperWrap II composite repairs.
First, the pipe was abrasive blasted to SA 2.5 achieving a surface profile of 75 microns. Following surface preparation, Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) was applied to restore the critical defect area. The Belzona SuperWrap II system was then applied in accordance with the design specification. The repair was engineered as a nine-wrap composite repair system using Belzona 1982 resin, to deliver a minimum service life of 15 years.

OUTCOME
The repair, featuring the Belzona SuperWrap II composite repair system over a restored defect area, was successfully completed and will ensure reliable service for a minimum of 15 years.

Belzona SuperWrap II
Composite repair system, Belzona SuperWrap II, offers a new generation repair solution for restoring the strength of holed, weakened and corroded pipe and tank walls. It is comprised of a fluid-grade resin system, a bespoke hybrid reinforcement sheet, based on fibre glass and carbon fibre, as well as a release film to compact and consolidate the application.
Belzona 1111 (Super Metal)
A 2-part repair composite for metal repair and resurfacing based on solvent-free epoxy resin reinforced with silicon steel alloy. This repair material will not corrode and resists a wide range of chemicals. It is easy to mix and apply without the need of specialist tools and can be machined using conventional tools.
