PROBLEM
External pitting corrosion was discovered on a storage tank, resulting in a thin-wall defect that required immediate repair.
APPLICATION
After gathering all relevant information, Belzona was selected as the solution. Belzona was used to fill the corrosion pits, and a custom designed Belzona SuperWrap II Composite Patch was used to restore the defect area and ensure the tank’s structural integrity.
First, surface preparation was carried out using abrasive blasting to achieve the optimal surface profile and cleanliness.
Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) was then applied to fill the defect area and smooth out the surface, including the metal plate lip edge and other non-uniform areas, ensuring a proper bonding surface for the SuperWrap II Composite Patch.
Next, four layers of SuperWrap II Composite Patch were applied, covering an area of approximately 600mm x 600mm, in accordance with the design. After this, the SuperWrap II Composite Patch was consolidated using a release film and allowed to fully cure.
Finally, the exposed bare metal perimeter of the patch was coated with Belzona 5811 for additional protection.

OUTCOME
A successful application was carried out using Belzona to pit fill the corrosion, restore the defect area and ensure the tank’s structural integrity without the need for hot work, saving time and additional cost.

Belzona 1111 (Super Metal)
A 2-part repair composite for metal repair and resurfacing based on solvent-free epoxy resin reinforced with silicon steel alloy. This repair material will not corrode and resists a wide range of chemicals. It is easy to mix and apply without the need of specialist tools and can be machined using conventional tools.
Belzona 5811
A 2-part epoxy coating which provides outstanding chemical resistance and protects equipment operating under immersion in aqueous solutions up to 50°C (122°F) from the effects of corrosion.
Belzona SuperWrap II
Composite repair system for restoring the strength of holed, weakened and corroded pipe and tank walls. Carbon fibre and fibre glass repair system designed and applied in accordance with ISO24817 and ASME PCC-2 standards.
