PROBLEM
Flare Knock Out Drums, a critical component of a flare system, are designed to remove liquid from flare gas. During 2015, the vessel was coated with Belzona 5891 to protect it from corrosion and chemical attack. In 2023, the drum was identified for inspection and recoating as part of the Crude Oil Distillation Unit (CDU) turnaround. The CDU distills the incoming crude oil into various fractions based on boiling point ranges, each of which are then processed further in the other refining processing units.

APPLICATION
Belzona 5892, an epoxy barrier coating suitable for surfaces in contact with aqueous solutions at temperatures up to 95°C (203°F) was selected as a replacement for Belzona 5891.
Surface preparation was carried out by abrasive blasting to SA 2.5 standards, achieving a surface profile of 75 microns. Masking tape was applied for both the first and second coats to ensure a neat finish.
For small-bore nozzles under 50 mm, Belzona 1511 sleeves were bonded in place to provide additional protection.

OUTCOME
The new coating provides enhanced protection against the high temperatures and chemical exposure of the Flare Knock Out Drum’s harsh operating environment.
In addition, the quality of the surface preparation and application will help to ensure long term protection of the vessel thereby extending the equipment’s service life and improving the safety and efficiency of the flare system.
