PROBLEM
A metal patch installed on a 600 NB overboard downpipe of an offshore platform had corroded due to prolonged exposure in the “wet zone” resulting in leakage.

APPLICATION
Due to corrosion of the previously applied steel plate, the repair was carried out using a Belzona SuperWrap II Composite Pad, which offered a non-corrosive solution.
The Composite Pad system is six times lighter than a steel plate making the rope access application significantly easier to complete. Before deployment to the site, two composite pads measuring 1.5 m × 1 m were prefabricated in the applicator’s workshop.Each was constructed with four layers of Belzona 9381 reinforcement sheet and Belzona 1982 SuperWrap II resin, using a section of 600 NB pipe as a former.
The completed composite pads were freighted offshore to the site and cold bonded onto the overboard riser using Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal).

OUTCOME
The repair will provide a long-term solution, thanks to the exceptional adhesive strength of Belzona 1161 and the corrosion-resistant design of the SuperWrap II Composite Pad system.
