PROBLEM
An oil and gas customer required the repair and reinforcement of a corroded pipe section.
A pipe bend and redundant nozzle added complexity to the application, while a defect around the nozzle weld also needed repair. All work had to be completed in situ while the plant remained operating.

APPLICATION
Following surface preparation, the defect around the redundant nozzle weld was repaired using Belzona 1161 and Belzona 9341 Reinforcement Tape.
Belzona 1161 was also used to build up and smooth the surrounding profile, creating a suitable contour for wrapping.
Belzona SuperWrap II was then applied using Belzona 1983 resin, Belzona 9381 reinforcement fabric and Belzona 9382 consolidation film to form a continuous composite repair around the bend and redundant nozzle.

OUTCOME
The repair successfully addressed the nozzle weld defect and reinforced the corroded pipework while accommodating the complex geometry of the bend and redundant nozzle. All work was completed in situ, without replacing the pipe section or interrupting plant operations.

Belzona SuperWrap II
Composite repair system, Belzona SuperWrap II, offers a new generation repair solution for restoring the strength of holed, weakened and corroded pipe and tank walls. It is comprised of a fluid-grade resin system, a bespoke hybrid reinforcement sheet, based on fibre glass and carbon fibre, as well as a release film to compact and consolidate the application.
Belzona 1161 (Super UW-Metal)
A 2-part composite material for metal repair and resurfacing based on a solvent-free, surface-tolerant epoxy resin reinforced with silicon steel alloy. This composite material is specifically designed for application to wet and oil contaminated surfaces, as well as for underwater applications. It is easy to mix and apply without the need of specialist tools and can be machined using conventional tools.
