PROBLEM
Inspections of eight nickel storage silos identified severe corrosion in the bottom sections, compromising their structural integrity.
Welding was not feasible due to the internal coatings, so a non-invasive repair solution was required to restore strength without damaging the lining.

APPLICATION
The application involved cold bonding 200 mm × 1 m rolled plates using Belzona, in accordance with Belzona Know-How System Leaflet TCC-1. Following abrasive blasting, all corrosion holes were initially repaired with Belzona 1111 (Super Metal).
Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) was then applied to the plates prior to bonding them into position. Belzona 1121 (Super XL-Metal) was used when temperatures exceeded 35°C to extend working time.

OUTCOME
The Belzona Cold Plate Bonding system was selected as a safer and more cost-effective alternative to welding. The cold application preserved the internal coating and eliminated the need to empty each silo, saving time and avoiding costly operational downtime.
After eight years of service, the repair remains fully intact and in excellent condition.

Belzona 1111 (Super Metal)
A 2-part repair composite for metal repair and resurfacing based on solvent-free epoxy resin reinforced with silicon steel alloy. This repair material will not corrode and resists a wide range of chemicals. It is easy to mix and apply without the need of specialist tools and can be machined using conventional tools.
Belzona 1121 (Super XL-Metal)
A 2-part repair composite for metal repair and resurfacing based on solvent-free epoxy resin reinforced with silicon steel alloy.
This repair material has been developed to offer an extended working life, ideal for large applications where greater volumes of material are required or to provide adequate working time at higher temperatures.
