PROBLEM
A mining customer was introduced to the benefits of cold bonding and was particularly impressed by a case study in which two 22-tonne chemical tanks were successfully lifted and relocated using metal pads bonded to the tanks.
As a result, he wanted to carry out his own lift test to demonstrate the cold bonding performance of Belzona 1111 (Super Metal).

APPLICATION
A 20 ft shipping container, with an additional 4 tonnes placed inside, was selected for the test, bringing the total weight to 6.2 tonnes. Calculations were carried out to determine the required plate size. Using the four corner posts, it was decided to bond 150 mm × 150 mm steel plates, with lifting lugs welded on, to each corner using Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) .
The customer was initially sceptical about the plate size, but we assured him they would be more than sufficient.

OUTCOME
Initially, the empty steel container was lifted without any issues. It was then loaded with 4 tonnes of abrasive blasting grit and lifted again.
At one point, there was a brief scare when one of the chains slipped against the side of the container, causing it to jolt mid-air. However, the plates remained firmly in place, which made a strong impression on the customer.
The container was then left suspended for four hours, clearly demonstrating the strength and reliability of Belzona’s cold bonding capabilities.

Belzona 1111 (Super Metal)
A 2-part repair composite for metal repair and resurfacing based on solvent-free epoxy resin reinforced with silicon steel alloy. This repair material will not corrode and resists a wide range of chemicals. It is easy to mix and apply without the need of specialist tools and can be machined using conventional tools.
