PROBLEM
A ball mill used in nickel mining operations showed extensive corrosion and erosion as a result of a poorly installed rubber lining applied by a contractor who had previously performed repair work on the mill.
Before a new lining could be installed, the applicator required a complete removal of the existing lining and for the internal surface to be ground back and abrasive blasted, and the internal shell to be re-surfaced.

APPLICATION
First, any previous lining product that was defective in terms of it not being flush with the parent metal, was removed.
Next, all pitting between 0.5mm and 10mm in depth was filled with Belzona 1111, and the surface flushed back to match the parent metal.
Washouts were filled with Belzona 1812. Where the mill head joins the shell, a release agent was applied to the head to ensure it can be removed in the future without interference from the Belzona material.

OUTCOME
The internal surface of the shell was repaired and fully screeded to achieve a flush, level finish, ensuring the successful installation of a new rubber lining over the top of the Belzona 1111.

Belzona 1111 (Super Metal)
A 2-part repair composite for metal repair and resurfacing based on solvent-free epoxy resin reinforced with silicon steel alloy. This repair material will not corrode and resists a wide range of chemicals. It is easy to mix and apply without the need of specialist tools and can be machined using conventional tools.
Belzona 1812 (Ceramic Carbide FP)
A 2-part epoxy-based composite material combining extremely hard closely packed abrasion resistant ceramic aggregates in a polymeric binder for the repair and protection of equipment damaged by fine particle abrasion.
