PROBLEM
The internal deck plate and housing of a ship’s winch had suffered severe corrosion, resulting in leakage onto critical electrical equipment located below.

APPLICATION
Abrasive blasting was not possible due to the risk to sensitive equipment located below the deck. Instead, surface preparation was carried out using bristle blasters and grinders to remove the existing coating and corrosion.
Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) was applied to rebuild the heavily pitted deck plate. Once cured, Belzona 5831 (ST-Barrier) was applied to provide long-term corrosion protection and further leak prevention.

OUTCOME
The repair was completed by onsite contractors within two days, ensuring minimal downtime and enabling the vessel to return to sea.

Belzona 1111 (Super Metal)
A 2-part repair composite for metal repair and resurfacing based on solvent-free epoxy resin reinforced with silicon steel alloy. This repair material will not corrode and resists a wide range of chemicals. It is easy to mix and apply without the need of specialist tools and can be machined using conventional tools.
Belzona 5831 (ST-Barrier)
A 2-part epoxy coating which once cured forms a barrier coating for the protection of equipment operating under immersed conditions or in contact with aqueous solutions.
