PROBLEM
A marine engineering company was commissioned to install new cutlass bearings on propeller shafts of a high-speed aluminium catamaran.
The bearings had to be accurately secured within their housings to ensure smooth shaft alignment, minimal vibration and long service life.

APPLICATION
Belzona 7111 was selected as the chocking material to secure the cutlass bearing within its housing in order to give it a solid, strong and precisely aligned seat around the catamaran’s propeller shaft.
The inner shaft support bearings were poured in the same way, with the low viscosity of Belzona 7111 making it an ideal choice for large pours and similar applications. Good working life was also achieved when mixed in accordance with the Solidifier Reduction Graph.
The choice of Belzona 7111 was driven by both performance and practical application benefits. Its higher compressive strength offered clear mechanical advantages, while the simplified mixing process and larger kit sizes significantly reduced the number of batches required compared with other products on the market.
In addition, the slower exotherm and low viscosity of Belzona 7111 allowed for larger, continuous pours and extended, more controlled working times making it ideal for filling the annular space around the bearing and achieving a void-free, reliable chock.

OUTCOME
Marine chocking pours represent a significant part of this marine engineering company’s business, and the performance of Belzona 7111 on this project, together with its five-year shelf life has reinforced its suitability for these applications.
As a result, Belzona 7111 has been selected as the preferred material for all their future marine chocking applications.
