PROBLEM
Commercial Marine Australia (CMA), a Brisbane-based aluminium vessel builder, required an engineered chocking solution to ensure precise alignment and reliable structural support of the propeller shaft and cutlass bearings on their 24-metre aluminium catamaran newbuild, Fitzroy Flyer.

APPLICATION
The cutlass bearings required precise installation within their housings to maintain correct shaft alignment, reduce vibration and ensure long-term reliability. To achieve this, Belzona 7111 was chosen as the chocking material, providing a strong, rigid and accurately aligned seating for the bearings around the catamaran’s propeller shaft.
The same pouring methodology was applied to the inner shaft support bearings, where the material’s low viscosity proved particularly well suited to larger volume pours. When mixed in accordance with the Solidifier Reduction Graph, Belzona 7111 offered an extended working life, allowing for controlled placement during installation. The selection of Belzona 7111 was based on both mechanical performance and practical handling advantages.

The material’s high compressive strength delivered robust structural support, while its simplified mixing process and availability in larger kit sizes reduced the number of batches required relative to alternative products. Furthermore, the combination of low viscosity and a slower exothermic reaction enabled larger, continuous pours with improved control during application. This made it especially effective for filling the annular space around the bearings, ensuring a consistent, void-free chock and a reliable final installation.
